Riding the white horse her father gave her as a wedding present , Priscilla and her husband, Samuel Rugg, came to the Turkeyfoot Valley in Somerset County, PA. The year is 1789 and she immediately becomes a person of suspicion to the early German settlers. They tag her as Hex Berge, or witch of the hills. The legend lives on. Move ahead one hundred years to the times of Mary Wyno, the witch from Slovenia whom most of the people in the area held with suspicion. She appears and disappears at will, she can silence horses and her spells become reality. Here in Hexie her spirit lives on.

I loved this book from one perspective. It is written about a small part of the world of which I am familiar. It has a goo story at it's heart, though some of the writing was tiresome. It suffered from not being professionally edited, but in an odd way I liked that part of it. It gave me a feel for the writing and editing process that I never got from more polished works.I wish the writer expanded on the meat of the story, and left out some of the irrelevant detail. I also think he was a little too concerned with shining a bright light on the residents of his beloved homeland. In reality, I expect there is much more depth in the range of the real people of the region. The characters seemed a little more like caricatures than actual people. I think some of the personality of the characters was lost due to the writer's attempt to make the good guys sound pious, intuitive, informed and empathetic. All of them seemed to speak with one mind, the bad guys, diametrically opposed.

A Place Called Hexie Samuel Miller 9781452027517 Books Reviews
Sam, the author, does not refer to this area as Witch's Hollow, but when I was visiting a client in Confluence, PA, a few years back, that's how he knew it. He said, "Everybody around here knows about the witch's hollow." The first witch, (yes, I said first) was Priscilla Rugg, an actual person, and a real ancestor of the author. A second "witch," Mary Wyno, was also suspect. Neither woman just quite "fit" into the normal scheme of things in this rural, mountainous community. He also discusses other women of the area who are just a bit "different." Sam winds real history into a nice, easy to read fictional plot. He has spent many hours researching the area history, and developing a plausible explanation of the "witches" for which Hexie gets it's name. Oh, by the way, I don't think you'll find Hexie on a real map, but the place is real enough. Sam bewitches the reader, and if you don't cry over the characters, I'll think you callous. It's a gift from his Rugg genes.

We had a wonderful journey today taking a ride into the hills and mountains of Pennsylvania with the GhostChasers of Pittsburgh. We partially followed the route described in the book, "A Place Called Hexie" by Samuel Miller. It was a beautiful clear, crisp Spring day to take a look into the past. As described in the book, we passed over the hill that looked into a wide panoramic expanse of rolling hills and valleys with the windmills off in the distance...an incredible view. The old covered bridge was beautiful and truly brought to mind the history of the area. With assistance from a local resident, our two paranormal research groups found some of the old homes in the area. We want to thank the author and his brother who had collected and researched the history of the area and its residents to bring us this delightful novel.
